The Daily Stump 4/11/24

The Masters Day One, Two NBA Playoff Matchups Locked In, A Guy Named Bones, and more!

Today’s the day folks: The Masters’ Day One. Not a lot of work getting done today for A LOT of people. Let’s all give Tiger our prayers, cause wouldn't that be a great story. The Masters IS Spring, it is beauty, it is class, it is TODAY. (Don’t worry, we’ll talk about other stuff in this newsletter too)

LETS. GET. INTO. IT.

THE DAILY STUMPED🔮

ON THIS DAY 🗓️

On this day in 2004, Phil Mickelson defeated Ernie Els at the 68th US Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club.

Phil birdied the 18th hole to win by one stroke, he would go on to win the Masters again in 2006 and 2010. Arguably the most famous picture of Phil (shown above), came after he sunk the winning putt in 2004.

STUMP STORY OF THE DAY✍️

Why the Hell is Everyone Obsessed with the Masters?

This may seem a little redundant, given that a lot of today’s (and the next few days) newsletter is going to prominently feature coverage and storylines from the week, but I’m going to try and explain why it’s all anyone can talk about right now.

  1. It’s tradition, and people love tradition. The first Masters was held at Augusta Golf Club in March of 1934, and has taken place every year since. Furthermore, while the other four Major Championships in the PGA rotate and move locations every year, the Masters is played at the same course, tradition. The schedule is the same as well: The Sunday before the start of the tournament, the Drive, Chip, and Putt Final takes place at the course. Monday the fans get their first look at the players and the warm-up rounds. Tuesday we have the Masters Champion Dinner (picked by last year’s winner), and Wednesday the legendary Par 3 Competition takes place, and then we have the real tournament. Every year. Tradition.

  2. It’s pretty. This may not seem important for the fan who knows everything about golf, but it does a lot for the casual fan. The flowers are beautiful, the scenery is immaculate, and the grass is cut so fine it looks like turf. This gives everyone something to look at. Even if you’ve never been there, it feels familiar for some reason. The Masters is the unofficial official start of Spring in the US, so it coincides with people in the colder areas finally taking out their golf bags!

  3. It’s classic, in more ways than one. The Masters gives off a classy throwback tradition, with the caddies rocking the all-whites, the pimento cheese sandwiches, and the prices! The tournament keeps its prices at rock bottom, something that is unheard of these days. People love that. It gets blown up on social media every year. Chicken club, turkey club, and ham sandwiches fill the menu at $3, while a beer to go along with it is only $6 (Also, the fact you can get a ham and cheese is PHENOMENAL).

  4. Dreams coming true. Personally, my favorite part is the players. As golfers, all of these guys grew up dreaming of playing in this tournament, and now they are there. They all have these wide eyes and look like kids in a candy shop. People love watching dreams come true, and a lot of dreams come true at The Masters.

I hope this gave a little bit of an insight into why the heck everyone is so in love with a golf tournament in Georgia that takes place every year. It’s not all about golf, it’s just human nature.

🎙️SONG OF THE DAY

The Masters’ Theme Song

Today’s the day. A tournament unlike any other. Very minimal work will be done today and tomorrow, and if you hear this song coming from someone’s desk, no you didn’t. Enjoy the serenity.
