On This Day…

⚾️ On this day in 1937, the Boston Red Sox acquired the contract of a 19-year-old ball player by the name of Ted Williams.

Williams went on to be considered as one of the best hitters of all time and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966. His most impressive feat may be hitting .406 in 1941, something no qualified hitter has done since.

Today’s Stump Story…

🏈 Championship Saturday: CFB Heaven

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s a beautiful day in the world of college football, let’s break down the top games from the top conferences…

Big 12 Championship: As far as traditional Big 12 powerhouses goes, this is not that. The Big 12 Championship is a perfect example of how conference realignment reshaped football. Arizona State and Iowa State have never played each other before, but both teams share a conference championship droughts. Iowa State completed their first 10-win regular season in school history and looks to win their first conference championship since 1912. Arizona State is in their second season of Big 12 football, and has the opportunity to go from worst to first. Their last conference title came in the form of a 2007 Pac-10 co-title. 12:00 PM on ABC, Sun Devils vs Cyclones.

SEC Championship: It’s a match of two college football titans in the SEC. Most impressively, Texas will make its SEC Championship debut in their first season as members of the conference. It’s an interesting matchup between the old guard of the conference and their newest addition. Despite some shaky performances in recent weeks, Georgia is the only team to have beaten Texas this year, a 30-15 blowout in mid-October. Both teams will be headed to the College Football Playoff no matter the outcome, but it will be interesting to see how both teams fair in the bright lights.

Big 10 Championship: This game is about two things, seeding in the College Football Playoff, and winning a league title. This is the first meeting between the two since the 1995 Rose Bowl, when Penn State completed a perfect season. The Ducks remain the only unbeaten team in college football, and seek a conference championship in their first year of Big 10 membership. Penn State has won 4 Big Ten titles, most recently in 2016, this one feels really important to the James Franklin and the Nittany Lions.

ACC Championship: The ACC title game features another team that is in it’s first year of conference membership, as newly minted Southern Methodist University (SMU) takes on ACC powerhouse Clemson. SMU has not only proved to be a conference powerhouse, but a potential national powerhouse. Behind QB Kevin Jennings, Rhett Lashlee’s team has been a force to reckon with all year long. Their one loss came at home to (18) BYU in early September. Clemson is and has been the school that you need to defeat to get to the top of the conference. Tigers QB Cade Klubnik has had a strong season, but loses to South Carolina, Louisville, and UGA has their College Football Playoff hopes leaning on this one game. Win and you’re in.

Quick Hitters

🏈 Championship Friday:

Tulane was no match for the triple option and struggled all night long. Daily caps off an amazing season for the Black Knights with a conference championship. Up next? A true American classic: The Army-Navy game. Army 35, Tulane 14.

  • Mountain West Conference Championship: UNLV has been an offensive juggernaut all season long, except for last night. Boise State came into the game hoping to clinch a College Football Playoff Spot, which they did. UNLV did not manage to get on the board until the 4th quarter, but it was too little, too late. Boise running back Asthon Jeanty put an exclamation point on his bid for the Heisman trophy with a 209-yard performance. Boise 21, UNLV 7.

🙏 Hall of Fame WR Randy Moss will take a hiatus from his role as an analyst on ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown” as he deals with a health issue. Moss has not specified on what the particular illness may be, but has asked for prayers after fans noticed something wrong with his eyes and wore sunglasses on the show.

🏒 Hours after trading their captain, the New York Rangers give their goalie a new contract. Igor Shesterkin, one of the best goalies in all of hockey, agreed to an 8 year deal with the Rangers. The contract will average $11.5-12 million a year. This makes Shesterkin the highest paid goalie in NHL history.

🏈 Bronco Mendenhall returns to Utah area. Former BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall accepted the head coach position at Utah State. Bronco was the head man at BYU form 2005-2015, where he led the program to 11 consecutive bowl games. Mendenhall left for UVA, where he spent 6 seasons before stepping down in 2021.
