College Football Hangover...

Week 1 Saturday Recap, The White Sox are Still Bad, and Scottie Closing in on first TOUR Championship

Let’s take a breath everyone. After the first full slate of college football, I’m sure a lot of us are left with a little hangover, and not the alcohol-induced kind. The kind where you had a lot of fun the day before and the next day you’re kind of like… “Now what?”. Trust me I get it, but just think, this time next week we’ll be getting ready for our first NFL Sunday!

Stump Story of the Day…

Michigan’s Newest QB: Cancer Survivor, Walk On, Next Big Thing

Following Michigan’s National Championship run last year, the team was left with a hole at quarterback. Heisman finalist JJ McCarthy left for the NFL and in turn a QB competition began in Ann Arbor.

The three guys in the running were Alex Orji, Jack Tuttle, and Davis Warren. After Tuttle was injured during training camp and Alex Orji seemed to fall off a little, Davis Warren began the leader in the clubhouse to be QB1.

Warren isn’t your prototypical big-time college football player. He wasn’t the chosen one, he wasn’t gifted the position, he has earned this moment. Warren is a LA kid, and at one time was a highly decorated recruit. Until adversity hit.

Warren was diagnosed with leukemia in 2019, when he was a sophomore in high school. He went through chemotherapy and returned to play four games in 2019. His senior year of 2020 was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Warren chose to walk on at the University of Michigan. He earned a spot on the team, eventually earning his scholarship, and now earning the starting quarterback position at the University of Michigan.

In the world of recruiting rankings and NIL and big time paychecks for quarterbacks, it is so refreshing to see such a resilient player earning his way into the spotlight.

Today’s Trivia🧠

🏈 Tennessee won by 66 points yesterday, the second-largest margin of victory in a season opener in school history, what is the largest?

  • A. 101

  • B. 150

  • C. 67

(answer at the bottom of the Stump!)

On This Day…

In 2006, Mr. Commish himself, Roger Goodell, officially took over as the boss man of the NFL.

What would we do if we didn’t have the commish to boo at every year at the draft? Where would we be as a society if we couldn’t blame everything on Roger? I don’t think I want to see that America.

OBJ catch but make it on defense!

Talking Points

🏈 College Football MAYHEM! Week 1 Cliff Notes…

For all the days we have without football, a day like yesterday you really soak it all in. There was a moment on my couch where I just kind of looked around in a main character kind of way, and just soaked it all in. College Football is SOOO BACK and here are the Week 1 Cliff Notes.

  • The DAWGS are the DAWGS! - Georgia def. Clemson, 34-3 - It was a respectable game for a while but then the Georgia Bulldogs did what they have done for years, they pulled away late. Georgia’s offense looked smooth and Clemson totaled 188 yards of O. Lot to improve on for the Tigers but they got this one out of the way early.

  • Gators Get a Miami Makeover! - Miami def. Florida, 41-17 - Well the Florida Gators have one of the hardest schedules ever made this year. It got off to an ugly start for the fellas and Head Coach Billy Napier. They needed to come out with juice, and all they had was a pulp. Just nothing good for the Gators. Miami on the other hand LOOKED GOOD!

  • The IRISH are Coming The IRISH are Coming! - Notre Dame def. Texas A&M, 23-13 - Transfer QB Riley Leonard from Duke marched down the field 85 yards in about 5 minutes to lead the Fighting Irish to a game-winning TD in the fourth! The kid looked good and helped the Irish win one of their toughest matchups of the year. An undefeated season and a Playoff berth could very well be on the table for Notre Dame!

⚾️ While You Were Watching Football, the White Sox Lost… Again.

The White Sox haven’t just been bad this year, they’ve been historically bad. The White Sox dropped another one to the Mets yesterday, their ninth straight. That is their 106th loss on the year, tying a franchise record in losses in a single season.

The White Sox are 4-35 since the All-Star break and they are on track to break the modern major league record for most losses in a season — 120. The White Sox’s winning percentage, which currently sits at .226, also puts them on track to finish with the worst winning percentage in American League history. That record is currently held by the 1916 Philadelphia Athletics with a .235 winning percentage.

The White Sox have already fired their manager and traded almost all of their assets, and there is no real bright light at the end of the tunnel yet. For White Sox fan’s sake, I hope they pull off some wins here and save their squad from the history books.

⛳️ Scheffler Up Big Heading Into Final Day

Well, it’s been a bit of a roller coaster first 3 days at the East Lake Golf Course. We came into the TOUR Championship with Scottie Scheffler up on the field. His closest competitor was Xander Schauffele 2 strokes behind. At the end of Day 1 Scottie has built a SEVEN stroke lead!

The Tournament seemed over after 18 holes. Colin Morikawa made a surge on Friday and brought the lead to four. And now after three days, Scottie has a 5-stroke lead at -26.

I mean it ain’t over til it’s over but things are looking good for Scottie.

Morikawa is at -21 and Stump HERO Sahith Theegala is at -17. If anybody can come back from down 9 strokes, it’s Sahith. We’ll see what happens! A win today would be Scottie’s first TOUR Championship despite heading into the tournament with the lead the past 2 years.

Late night ball. Whatever your reason may be, late-night football is essential for a big-time football guy. Whether you’re trying to make back some losses from the day, need something to fall asleep to, or just like gritty football, those 10:30 PM ET starts are great.

Trivia Answer:

A. 101! On Sept. 25, 1915 the Tennessee Volunteers defeated Carson-Newman University 101-0. That seems kind of unfair to me. RAISE THE WHITE FLAG!
