College Football Fight Night
Why we should probably STOP planting flags...
If you didn’t tune into college football yesterday, you surely missed a lot. From big stumpsets, to bigger fights, it was wild. Good thing we have everything you need to catch up before NFL Sunday. While I’m writing this, a fifth massive fight is going on at midfield following a rivalry game went on, so let me tune into that real quick. What a weird world we live in… LET’S STUMP!
Today’s Trivia🧠
Which NFL game are you looking forward to the most today?? |
(answer at the bottom of the Stump!)
On This Day…
⚾️ On this day in 1964, the Houston baseball franchise officially changed its name to the Astros.
Did you know that before becoming the Astros, the nickname for the franchise was the Houston Colt .45s? They were known as the Colt .45s for a total of three seasons, what a crazy name!
Today’s Stump Story…
🏈 What’s the Deal with Postgame Brawls?
We’ve seen this a few different times in the past, especially when it comes to in-state rivalries, but we’ve never seen something like this before.
Rivalry weekend has come and gone, and this year was different. Not only were there upsets and insane finishes, but there were also some very intense postgame scuffles. Like I said, this isn’t necessarily unusual, but we’ve never seen anything like this, FOUR MASSIVE post-game brawls, all in one day.
By far the worst of them all was between Ohio State and Michigan. This is arguably the most intense rivalry in college football and there’s been their fair share of scuffles and crazy moments in the past, but this one may have taken the cake. Michigan was a massive underdog coming into the game against (2) Ohio State, it was an ugly game, with lots of mistakes by both teams, but Michigan came out on top. Following the game, the Wolverines tried to plant their flag at midfield…it didn‘t go well.
Michigan was met with a wall of Ohio State players who were not having it. It felt like the brawl went on for 10 minutes, fists flying, bodies on the ground, coaches, police officers, and staff doing their best to get in between the players but failing. The highlight of it all came when Ohio State star player Jack Sawyer ripped the flag off of it’s pole, stomping on the M. The police ended up using pepper spray on the field to separate it all, WILD!
A very similar thing went down in the UNC vs NC State game after NC State tried to plant their flag at midfield of UNC’s stadium. The two got into a heated fight at midfield, including fists and pushing. The same situation went down in the Arizona-Arizona State game when State tried to plant their signature pitchfork on the Arizona logo. A massive brawl there, too. Late last night Florida planted the flag at Florida State. You guessed it, another big fight.
What’s with all this flag planting? Is it good or bad for the game? Some say the losing team needs to not be sore losers, some say the winners need to win with more class. I say, let’s do all that stuff in the locker room. With students rushing the field, fans, family, and donors all over, it’s just not safe. The fact that Ohio State and Michigan got so bad that there had to be pepper spray used is insanity. The players are a product of their environment, and when coaches let this kind of stuff boil over, it’ll only end with something bad like this.
Quick Hitters
🏈 Coaching changes happen, but this one was interesting. UCF head coach and former Auburn head man, Gus Malzahn, has resigned from his position. Malzahn has left one Florida school for another, as he has agreed to become the offensive coordinator at Florida State under Mike Norvell. Florida State came into this season with high expectations and failed to reach pretty much every one of them. Malzahn runs a high-octane no-huddle offense, one that will surely benefit from having access to high-level recruits of an ACC program.
🏀 In the 3rd place game of the Players Era Festival, (6) Houston fell to San Diego State, 73-70 in OT. This comes at the end of a crazy week in college basketball that featured a furry of upsets. These upsets will surely shuffle up the rankings in the AP Poll at the beginning of next week. San Diego State was led by Miles Byrd, who dropped 18 points in the victory.
🏈 Mac Brown, legendary head coach at Texas and North Carolina, has officially coached his last game, for now. UNC announced that Brown would not return to the program next year, and officially announced yesterday that he won’t coach the team at their bowl game. Mack Brown has been a head coach for over 35 seasons, amassing 282 wins in his career. He won a National Championship in 2005 at Texas, the program’s last natty. We’ll see if Brown ends up coaching somewhere again or if he hangs up the whistle.
🏈 Across college football we saw some rivalry games go wire-to-wire. (5) Notre Dame and USC battled it out in LA, but it was Notre Dame’s two second-half pick-sixes that were different in the game. (9) SMU defeated Cal to punch their ticket in the ACC championship game, while (4) Penn State will now play in the Big Ten championship thanks to Michigan’s upset of OSU. Syracuse upset (6) Miami in the Carrier Dome, which vaulted (12) Clemson into the ACC Championship game despite the Tiger’s loss to (15) South Carolina. (29) Iowa State battled with (24) Kansas State, and Iowa State came out on top. (3) Texas had a shaky performance offensively, but the defense held (20) Texas A&M scoreless offensively. Texas heads to the SEC Championship in their first season in the conference.
