On This Day

⚾️ Two Hits, Two Teams, One Day

I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen a day in the MLB like outfielder Joel Youngblood had, my guy must’ve needed some serious zzzzz’s after this 24 hours.

On this day in 1982, outfielder Joel Youngblood is the only MLB player to get hits for two different teams in two different cities on the same day. Joel played an afternoon game for the Mets in Chicago, gets trade to the Expos and plays a night game in Philadelphia. He singled in both games!

Today’s Trivia

You may know the guys who have been hitting bombs this year in the MLB, but which player has the most hits this season?

Glue Guy of the Day

⛳️ Cameron Young: A Winner on Tour

The PGA Tour may be the hardest professional sport to get the elusive first win in, and for Cameron Young, he surely felt that struggle.

7-runner up finishes since his rookie season in 2022, Cameron Young has been a name we’ve watched come just short over and over again. Yesterday, there was no doubt that Young was going to come home with the win. First straight birdies early built a nine-shot lead for Young, who coasted home to win the Wyndham Championship by six shots over Mac Meissner.

He finished with a 22-under 258, tying JT Poston and Henrik Stenson for the tournament solo scoring record. Not only is Young finally in the winners circle, but his bank account got a nice little boost. Young took home $1.476 million. He also became the 1,000th unique winner in the history of the PGA Tour, a nice little added boost.

The best part of this was the emotion we saw from Young in the winners circle, something he’d admitted to not knowing where to find. After he nailed the winning putt you can hear him say “Where do I go? I’ve never done this before”. Then in his interview you could hear his voice choke up and the tears starting to form, a moment he’ll always remember.

There’s really nothing like watching some of these guys who grind it out on the Tour for years take home their first victory, it’s beautiful to see. All those years of hard work and extra time on the course, coming back every weekend trying to bring home a win, no matter how many times it takes.

The future is bright for a guy like Cameron Young, there’s something to be said for guys who just keep showing up.

The BIG Moments

⚾️ MLB Weekend Notes and Numbers

The Stump Short Story: Remember Sparknotes? Well this is that, but from this weekend around the MLB

  • Speedway Classic: Eli White hit two homers and had four RBIs to lead the Braves to a win over the Reds in the rain-delayed MLB Speedway Classic at Bristol Motor Speedway. The MLB built a stadium inside the race track, and it was awesome!

  • Yankees Get Swept, Sox Sweep: It was the first time in Marlins history that the club swept the Yankees, brining Miami to .500 for the first time since April 15. The Red Sox, who now hold second place over the Yanks, swept the Houston Astros at home in Boston.

  • 20-20 for Julio: Seattle’s young star Julio Rodriguez made history this weekend by becoming the first player to hit 20 or more home runs and 20 or more stolen bases in each of his first four seasons. It’s an absolute honor to watch this guy play baseball.

Why it Matters: There’s so much that goes on in the world of the MLB in a single day, especially in a given weekend, so to get the highlights and gist of the big stuff is imperative. So here you go, that’s the big stuff!

🤑 Luka Inks 3-Year Extension With Lakers

The Stump Short Story: Well, in case you thought that was going to be just a quick short and sweet LA stint for Luka Doncic, you can go ahead and cross that idea off the list. Yesterday the Lakers inked the superstar to a 3-Year, $165 million extension. I guess we say this every single year, but LeBron can only have so many amazing years left. It seems like this will be one of the most real chances they have to contend for it all maybe before he hangs it up. The offseason workout vids have been showing that he has lost a ton of weight, but we all know how those offseason pics always look! Hopefully he did take everything that happened personally and comes back looking like a new man!

Why it Matters: As has been the case in recent years, but the West is an absolute gauntlet of teams. Forget about OKC and Denver, after that Houston, LAC, Golden State, Minnesota, Memphis, and Dallas all pose serious threats as well. The West has been loaded and now the Lakers will get their first full season of the Luka-LeBron duo! We’ll see how it goes!

😦 James Cook Sitting Out…Storms Brewin…

The Stump Short Story: Yellllllo. Resident Bills fan here. I’ll tell you what. Everything I’ve seen from James Cook these last few years, his demeanor, his style, everything, there is no way he is playing until something new is inked. Still love him, he’s a great back, but really just don’t see that happening. I’m sure Brandon Beane is crunching the numbers in the back to see how things would work, but honestly I could absolutely see a media heavy holdout from Cook these next few weeks. We’re reaching that time, fantasy owners beware.

Why it Matters: I’ll tell you what, one thing this could mean is that Ray Davis stock just went UPPPPPPP. If you’re drafting in a fantasy league soon maybe just poke around and see when he’s popping up on your big board, that could be a late round steal is Cook doesn’t end up suiting up.
