On This Day…

🎾 Is it crazy to talk some tennis today? On this day in 1972, 17-year-old Chris Evert won the inaugural WTA Tour Championship at Boca Raton! She defeated Kerry Melville 7-5, 6-4.

Because she was only 17 at the time, she was not old enough to receive the prize money! How insane is that?!? Luckily, she would go on to win millions from the sport, which at the time was unheard of.

Today’s Featured Story…

🏈 Cam Rising: Year.. 8?

The typical college experience is 4 years, sometimes 5, but for the average case scenario, it is 4 years. Cam Rising, a QB at the University of Utah, could potentially double that number. How, you may ask? I’ll tell ya how.

Cam Rising has won TWO Pac-12 titles as the QB at the University of Utah, he’s arguably one of the best QBs in the nation when he’s healthy. The problem is, he hasn’t been healthy really ever.

Utah head coach said that Cam Rising will be out “indefinitely” this year and likely for a good portion of the remainder of the year, if not the whole year. While the news may seem pretty rough in the short term, it leaves the door open for Rising to return for his 8th year of eligibility.

To get his eighth year of eligibility, he has two paths: 1. Since he will likely play in less than four games this year and suffered a season-ending injury, he can apply for a medical redshirt. This allows college athletes to get an extra year of edibility when they miss a whole year. 2. He can apply for a hardship waiver. In June, the US Dept. of Justice ruled that players who were forced to sit out a year after transferring (a rule that is now changed) prior to the 2019 season can get that year of eligibility back. Rising was forced to sit out the 2019 season after transferring from Texas to Utah, because of course he was.

Here’s how his career has played out:

  • 2018 at Texas he redshirted (which means he didn’t play but didn’t lose a year of eligibility, each player gets five years to play 4 seasons)

  • 2019 he transferred to Utah and sat the whole year because of the transfer rule at the time

  • 2020 he played one game and tore his knee apart

  • 2021/2022 he was the Utah starter and led them to two Pac-12 titles

  • 2023 he tore his knee apart again

  • 2024 he hurt his hand in the second game and then returned a few weeks later only to hurt his lower leg

He’s now been in college for SEVEN YEARS, he’s played in 29 games. College teams, at a minimum, play 12 games a year. Rising got his degree in 2021, but now he has a chance to play in 2025.

I’m not saying this is wrong or right, I’m just saying this is pretty nuts. You decide if it’s good or bad for the sport.

Yesterday, In a Nutshell

NLCS: The Mets came out yesterday with some serious juice. It started with a Francisco Lindor leadoff homer to start the game and a Mark Vientos grand slam in the second inning. The Dodgers didn’t go down quietly, but the noise early by the Mets was enough to have the series tied 1-1 going to NY.

ALCS: Yankees defeated the Guardians in Game 1 in the Bronx! Solo HOMERS from Soto and Stanton as well as some wild pitches led to a 5-2 Win for the Bronx Bombers!

🏈 MNF: The final score of last night’s game was…WAIT. Hold on wait a second let’s check for the penalty flag…my god were there some flags last night. Sloppy second-half ball led to a Buffalo win over the Jets, 23-20!

🏈 Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy had to take yesterday’s weekly news conference to Zoom yesterday. Why? Because he suffered a pretty odd injury to his eye. How? He got headbutted by one of his cattle. Oi vey! OK State has lost three games in a row, I guess his cows weren’t to happy about that…

🏀 Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball is expected to make his long-awaited return to the court in tomorrow’s preseason game against the Timberwolves. Ball has missed two years in a row following multiple procedures on his left knee, including a pretty rare double cartilage transplant.

🏒 Father of the late Johnny Gaudreau attended Blue Jackets practice yesterday to speak to the players and share some touching moments with his sons’ former teammates. The Blue Jackets will honor Johnny, and his brother Matthew, at their home opener tonight.

Maybe a love song or maybe a song to describe how I look at the last slice of pizza of the pie. Nobody really knows.

🗣 Quote OTD🗣

“It’s not the will to win that matters, everybody has that. It’s the will to prepare to win that matters”

Coach Bryant knows how to get the juices flowing. He coached Alabama for 10 years longer than Saban did, and it seemed like Saban was there for 150 years!

Trivia Answer:

C. Bill Self - Kansas! Despite some coaches getting some MASSIVE contracts this offseason, Bill Self still takes the cake at over $9 million a year. Dan Hurley comes in at second with an average salary of $8.3 million.
