🏀 Wemby Takes a Trip Home
“Play Paris” is here 🤩
Today’s the opening of our new court in Le Chesnay, @wemby’s hometown!

Victor Wembanyama had a smile as big as his wingspan yesterday as he opened up two brand new basketball courts in his hometown.
The Spurs are in France this week as they will play a pair of games against the Indiana Pacers as part of the NBA’s International tour this season. Their star, Victor Wembanyama, feels right at home in Paris.
A few months back, Wemby went to Spurs general manager Brian Wright and discussed the possibility of putting in some new courts in his hometown in France and unveil them during their trip. While many just assume Wemby is from Paris, he is actually from Le Chesnay, a smaller town about 12 miles west of Paris.
It was a big ask, there was many things to get done. Even the mayor of his hometown didn’t think it could happen. The space he selected had old courts, a design needed to be created, approved, and built. It was the rainy season in France and it was not good construction weather, so that was a nonstarter. His hometown is close to the Palace of Versailles, so building anything at all is a problem. But what Wemby wants, he gets.
The town is traditionally a equestrian, handball, and racing town, but now, it’s a basketball town, and it finally has the courts to support it. A full 5×5 court straddled by a 3×3 court, with a Spurs logo and a nod to the famous clocktower of the city sit in the middle of the court. Yesterday, Wemby revealed the fresh new playing surface to about six dozens children, while parents and locals watched from the stands. It was a beautiful moment.
All of this is part of the Spurs ‘Play Paris’ initiative, designed to create a hub around basketball to inspire the next generation of athletes and showcase the power of sports to bring people together. The Spurs have always had a big foothold in international basketball over the years, and this is just another moment in the franchises great history.
Quick Hitters
⭐️ Three MLB legends cross the threshold for Baseball Hall of Fame enshrinement: Ichiro Suzuki, CC Sabathia, and Billy Wagner. Suzuki fell one vote shy of being only the second unanimous selection in MLB history, he received 393 of 294 votes. He becomes the first Japanese player in MLB history to make it into the hall. Sabathia, like Ichiro, was also on the ballot for the first time. Sabathia is one of 19 pitchers in MLB history to finish his career with more than 3,000 strikeouts. Wagner was one of the most electric and dominant closers of his era, racking up 422 saves in his career. That’s good enough for eight all time. His selection comes in his 10th year appearing on the ballot, which is the last year in HOF voting. Wanger has an especially inspiring story as he becomes the first pitcher that played Division III college baseball to make it into Cooperstown.
🤯 Barcelona rallies late to advance in Champions League. Down 3-1 halfway in to the second half, Barcelona looked out of touch and out of breath. Benfica’s Vangelis Pavlidis put up a hate trick in the first 30 minutes and Barcelona was firmly on their heels. Their poor play in recent La Liga matches had finally caught up to them on the big stage. A glimmer of hope came in the 64th minute when Raphinha scored to cut it to one score. Four minutes later, a Benfica own goal put the match at a 3-3 draw. Eric Garcia scored in the 86th to give Barca a late lead, their first of the match. Raphinha shut the door on Benfica in the 6th minute of stoppage time to secure a spot in the next round, bringing their overall tournament record to 6-0-1.
🎾 In the battle of youth versus wisdom, wisdom won. Novak Djokovic rallied past Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals of Australian Open. It was an absolutely terrific match, but there is something about Djokovic and the Aussie Open that brings some sort of inevitability to it. Only four men have been able to beat him in this tournament over the last 15 years. Djokovic lost the first set, but then rattled of three straight set wins to end the match. It was an absolutely class performance from one of the best to ever do it. Despite facing concerns by doubters due to a leg injury earlier in the month, Novak settled in nicely and ended up dominating the much fresher Alcaraz. He was brutal, ruthless, and aggressive in every single way. He’ll face Alexander Zverev next with a date in the finals up for grabs.

C. James Harden. Some people forget the time when Harden could literally drop 50 points on any given night. He has 23 career 50-point games, good enough for fourth all time and only two behind Kobe. Next highest active player is Damian Lillard with 15, LeBron with 14, and Steph with 13.
