On This Day…

🏒 On this day in 1966, Bobby Orr makes his debut for the Boston Bruins in their game against the Detroit Red Wings. Orr went on to have an absolutely legendary career in the NHL, which led to his eventual enshrinement in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
He won 2 Stanley Cups, 2 Conn Smyth Trophies (Stanley Cup MVP), 3 Hart Trophies (NHL MVP), 8 NHL All-First Team Honors, and was given the Norris Trophy 8 times as the NHLs best defenseman. Orr has a statue of his iconic dive after scoring a game-clinching dive (pictured above) outside the TD Garden in Boston.

🏀Game. 5. For the Finals!

It was another intense back-and-forth game in the WNBA Finals last night, with the Lynx and Liberty battling for all four quarters. In the end, the Lynx were able to force a decisive game 5 in New York. Let’s look at what it all means for both squads.
The Liberty and the Lynx were the number one and two overall seeds heading into the postseason. It almost felt like the two were destined to meet head-to-head with the WNBA Finals Trophy on the line and for the right to call themselves champions.
The Lynx have a rich history of winning. After drafting Maya Moore in the late 2000’s, the Lynx began to put the pieces together. They won their first finals championship in 2011 and went on to win one every other year up until 2017 for a total of 4.
From 2011 to 2017, the Lynx were a mainstay in the finals, appearing in three in a row two separate times in those seven seasons. The one year they didn’t make the finals was in 2013 when they lost in the conference finals and were one game away from another trip. In the 2010s, the Lynx were the most dominant team in the league.
The Liberty are an original WNBA squad and were one of the best teams in the league right out of the gate. The only problem? They couldn’t win the big one. The Liberty lost in the finals in 1997, 1999, 2000, and 2002. From 1997 to 2015, the Liberty lost in either the Finals or Conference Finals THIRTEEN times.
This is the second year in a row the Liberty have made it to the finals, losing a crazy series to the Las Vegas Aces last year. They have a storied past, but everyone focuses on their inability to win the big one.
Now, both teams have the opportunity to etch their name in history. The Liberty can rewrite their past struggles, and the Lynx can add their name among the greats of the Lynx's storied past.
Lynx. Liberty. Brooklyn, NY. Tomorrow @ 8:00 PM.
Yesterday, In a Nutshell

🏀 Following up on yesterday's story, newly-retired UVA head coach Tony Bennett cites the state of the game as the main reason for his retirement. Bennett is not a fan of where NIL and the transfer portal is taking basketball, and it has caused him to lose a passion and love for the game that he once had. He is not the first coach to move on citing these reasons, Jay Wright and Nick Saban had similar stories.
⚾ ALCS: A crazy back-and-forth game and another Guardians come back in the late innings, but it was just not enough tonight. The Yanks answered in a BIG WAY in the ninth, adding two huge runs. The Yanks have an opportunity to end the series tomorrow in Cleveland.
⚾ NLCS: The Mets JUMPED out to a quick three lead thanks to a big bomb from the Polar Bear Pete Alonso! In the third inning, New York put up another 5 runs and then never looked back. The series heads back to LA with the Dodgers leading 3-2.
🏈 After being shot in the leg during the preseason in an attempted robbery, 49ers rookie 1st round pick Ricky Pearsall is set to make his debut this weekend against the Chiefs. A truly intriguing game that just got a little more interesting.
🏀 The NBA PRESEASON is officially OVER! The first game takes place this upcoming Tuesday with the following two games: New York Knicks @ Boston Celtics, followed by Los Angeles Lakers @ Minnesota Timberwolves.
🏒 The Dallas Stars signed their star goalie Jake Oettinger to an eight-year, $88 million contract extension to keep him in Dallas through the 2032-33 season. Oettinger has a 116-48-23 record in his five NHL seasons. He’s a core piece for Dallas to continue to build around.
💯Top Performers:
⚾ Pete Alonso (NYM): 2 hits, reached base 4 times, accounted for 7 runs
⚾ Giancarlo Stanton (NYY): One BIGGG homer to extend the Yanks lead!
🏒 Cole Perfetti (WPG): 2 goals, 2 assists
🏀 Jalen Brunson (NYK): 27 points, 5 assists

Trivia Answer:
D. Smurf Turf! The nickname became popular following the instillation of the vibrant blue turf and has become commonplace when referencing to Boist State’s stadium. One of the more interesting looking places to play football in college sports.
