We are in what seems like Episode 128 of watching this Boston Celtics team in the playoffs. We’ve seen the cornerstones of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown with a mix of good pieces around them for a while now. Why is it that after half a decade, I still can’t figure this team out?

Yesterday we saw a second-half offensive clinic from the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Celtics looked thoroughly outmatched. When it was crunch time and there was a need for a run-stopping bucket from the Celtics. They went back to what we’ve seen over and over again. Jayson Tatum taking contested shots and stepbacks that just didn’t seem like an efficient offense.

Donovan Mitchell was making ridiculous shots on one end and then when we saw Tatum try to answer on the other side, they just weren’t falling. Although a completely different series, I kept getting flashbacks to their Finals matchup against the Warriors when everybody was waiting for a Celtic to step up.

And one did, it just wasn’t Jayson Tatum. It was Jaylen Brown.

Around that time there was a hot take going around the sports world questioning whether or not Jayson Tatum was the best player on the team. I didn’t the take then, and I don’t hate it now.

Here’s where I’m at. I think in terms of pure skill yes Jayson Tatum is the most talented player on his team, and he has been for a while. But I think it’s ok to say how that’s different from who you go to in crunch time when you need a bucket. The bucket guy has to be Jaylen Brown on that team. Yes, it’s only 1 loss in an otherwise dominant run, but the Celtics have a championship or bust mentality this year, and I don’t know if the juice they are showing right now is enough to bring home the big one.

But I guess what do I know. I know I’ll be paying attention to the rest of this series very closely especially in Cleveland to see how the Celtics rebound from this ugly loss.
