STUMP STORY OF THE DAY✍️

Gone But Never Forgotten: Kobe Bryant

Yesterday, a new statue of Kobe was unveiled outside the Crypto.com Arena (where the Lakers play), lets dive into it…

The second of three statues to honor the late Kobe Bryant was unveiled yesterday in a private tented ceremony outside the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California.

This statue depicts Kobe and his daughter Gigi. The first statue is a 19-foot bronze memorial to Bryant’s 81-point game against the Toronto Raptors. That was unveiled in early February.

The two release dates hold similar numerical importance, the February date (2/8/24), and yesterdays date (8/2/24), represent both of Bryant’s numbers and the No. 2 that Gigi had worn in her own basketball career.

A plaque in front of the statue reads the following: “Gianna Bryant, Inspirational Icon for Girls in Sports” and “Kobe Bryant, Proud Supporter of Women in Sports.” Underneath that is a quote from Kobe about his daughter, “Gianna is a beast. She’s better than I was at her age. She’s got it. Girls are amazing. I would have five more girls if I could. I’m a girl dad.”

The third statue is rumored to be unveiled sometime next season.

On the same day, the home locker that Kobe used from 2003-2004 to his final season in LA in 2015-2016, sold for $2.9 million. The most valuable sports locker to ever sell at auction.

It’s the third-most expensive piece of Bryant memorabilia of all time, behind a game worn, autographed, and authenticated jersey from his rookie year ($3.69 million), and a similar autographed, game worn, and authenticated jersey from his 2007-2008 MVP season.

During the Staples Center’s 2018 renovations, an unnamed maintenance worker saved Bryant’s locker from demolition and sold it to a private collector who reunited it with the nameplate.
