👶 Baby Scheffler Steals Show

Dad wasn't too bad either

Good Morning, Stumpers!

Despite a pretty normal Scottie Scheffler performance on one of golfs biggest stages, it was still a great weekend in sports. Not only did we get to see pure perfect on the course, we also saw plenty of statements coming out of the WNBA All-Star Game. Oh, and the NFL needs to figure out what the heck is going on in the players association. That, and maybe some cute baby content. Let’s get after this Monday!

On This Day

💪 Hammerin’ Hank Hits No. 700

There has not been many better better in the history of baseball than Hank Aaron. He’s hit some iconic home runs, and the one he hit on this day is right up there.

On this day in 1973, Hank Aaron hit his 700th career home run in the third inning when his Braves team took on the Philadelphia Phillies. This was a significant moment in Hank’s career, he became only the second player to reach the 700 mark at that time. It was a massive day in his pursuit of Babe Ruth and the all-time home run mark.

Glue Guy of the Day

⛳️ Scottie Bennett Scheffler

Let’s just get this out of the way, Scottie Scheffler is the best golfer we’ve seen since Tiger Woods. I don’t care what you think, it’s obvious at this point. It feels like just about every other Sunday we get to see Scottie take the winners circle, and who’s always there? His son Bennett.

With Scottie always being in the spotlight, his son Bennett has gotten a lot of attention. After Dad won The Open Championship yesterday, the third leg of a career grand slam, we were treated with some real cute content.

Bennett, Scottie’s one-year old son, stole the show in the winners circle as his pops accepted the Claret Jug. Bennett tried to make his way to the 18th green to join his dad in celebration, but his journey took a little detour. He tried to run up the hill, but he took a little tumble and ended up on all fours. He decided to stay there for a little, but eventually made his way over to Scottie. The crowd saw the whole thing, following along with sighs and claps.

Just like after Scottie’s win at the PGA Championship this year, we were treated to some really good golf from dad, and even better cute baby content from Bennett.

Scottie made headlines this week in an interview when he said he doesn’t find fulfillment in winning, and that it’s not really all that important to him. This isn’t the first time he’s kind of sounded off about this feeling. He talks about how much family means to him, and that is by far his biggest commitment and reason for happiness. Hopefully along the path of golf, moments like this with his son bring him some sort of fulfilment.

The BIG Moments

🏈 NFLPA Chief Officer Tretter Resigns

The Stump Short Story: The NFL Players Association is going through a lot of changes right now. NFL Executive Director Lloyd Howell resigned last Thursday after some questioned his interests due to a consulting position that may conflict with his priorities as executive director. Now, Chief Officer JC Tretter is also stepping down after 4 years in the role. Tretter was the front runner to replace Howell, but now, the search continues.

Why it Matters: The NFLPA represents the interests of the players when in negotiations with owners and NFL higher powers. Now, the organization is without it’s top two leaders as they head into a new season. Granted, it seems that there may have been some not so great stuff going on behind closed doors, so maybe the NFL players are better off for it. Either way, it’s time for some new leadership.

🏀 WNBA All-Star Weekend

The Stump Short Story: Napheesa Collier stole the show on the court with her record breaking 36-point effort to lead her team to a 151-131 win over Team Clark in Friday night’s WNBA All-Star Game. Team Clark was without their namesake, as Clark was dealing with a groin injury. In the three point contest, Sabrina Ionescu won her 2nd career contest as she lit it up the from beyond the arc. It was what went on off the court that really caught the attention of fans.

Why it Matters: The WNBA players are in the middle of a Collective Bargaining negotiation with the league, seeking increased raises, among other things. The WNBA All-Star was full of statements, including players wearing “Pay Us What You Owe Us” warm-up shirts, chants from the fans, and All-Stars holding up signs with similar sentiments. As the WNBA continues it’s rise, this contract negotiation will only gain more attention in coming weeks.

⛳️ The Open from Northern Ireland

The Stump Short Story: It was all Scottie Scheffler, all weekend long. There was no doubt that in most minds who was gong to win, Scottie doesn’t blow leads. But in the shadows, there were two really cool stories that flew under the radar. Byson DeChambeau and Wyndham Clark. Bryson was +7 after the first round, and Wyndham was +5. That did not stop them. They got hot, quick. Clark got all the way to -11, good enough for a tie for 4th. Bryson climbed to -9, a tie for 10th. Bryson shot a 78 on Thursday, a 64 on Sunday. Wow.

Why it Matters: These guys looked a brutal round in the face and just said, screw it. They had nothing to lose. They just came out firing. It was fun to watch, because you could tell these guys really were proud of themselves for scratching and clawing their way to the top. I love it. Keep fighting!
