Florida (State) Football Failure

Are Florida State and U Florida ready for new head coaches, why is Gerrit Cole soft, and a Messi masterclass!

Happy Sunday y’all! Sorry if today’s newsletter is focused on college ball, but man is there a lot to digest. One of those days where there wasn’t a lot of big matchups, but there were a lot of INTERESTING things that went down throughout the day. So let’s all take a breath, relax, and DIG IN!

Today’s Trivia🧠

🏈Arch Manning played his first significant game time yesterday, he is the son of WHICH Manning brother?

  • A. Peyton Manning

  • B. Cooper Manning

  • C. Eli Manning

  • D. Archie Manning

  • E. Mario Manningham

(answer at the bottom of the Stump!)

On This Day…

In 1963, the ALOU brothers roamed the outfield for the San Francisco Giants outfield for one inning in a 13-5 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Forbes Field.

Felipe, Matty, and Jesus all took the field at the same time, the first and only time THREE brothers have done this. Shoutout to the head ball coach in San Francisco for making this happen.

What’s Worth Your Time

🏈Is it time for FSU to move on from Norvell?

The Florida State Seminoles have been the biggest disappointment of the 2024 College Football season. I do not think for a second it’s a reach to say that. It’s true. But does that mean it’s time to go for head ball coach Mike Norvell?

FSU hit an all-time low yesterday when Mike Norvell and his squad took on the Memphis Tigers, the team that Norvell left to head to Tallahassee, and got downright embarrassed at home. Score wise it wasn’t really an embarrassment, but culturally, program-wise, and name-brand-wise, it was.

FSU sits here today at 0-3, and they spent a lottttt of money this offseason in the transfer portal. When people spend money and don’t see the results they like, they get angry. Do I think that Norvell should get fired? No. But that doesn’t mean he won’t. Think Jimbo at A&M last year.

🏈 Notre Dame: Back on Track

The time of the year has come when Notre Dame has a bad loss, then they go on to get hot, and then everyone is like “What about Notre Dame?” at the end of the season. It’s an annual tradition. Welcome to that time of the year!

Notre Dame went to West Lafayette, Indiana and just absolutely dismantled the Purdue Boilmakers. 66-7. Brutal. The Fighting Irish pulled the starters after halftime. It was ugly. Notre Dame could do pretty much whatever they wanted.

Honestly, it pisses me off. Notre Dame SHOULD be good. This happens EVERY YEAR. I don’t want to listen to it again. They’re lucky we have a 12-team playoff now. They just can’t suck me in again. I won’t let it happen. I’m OFF the Notre Dame hype train. Someone else take my seat.

⚾️ Gerrit Cole and the no-good, very bad, intentional walk!

Boy oh boy, things got interesting in Bronx yesterday. It’s pretty well advertised that Raffy Devers has pretty much owned Gerrit Cole since he the two became familiar with each other. In the fourth inning yesterday with nobody on base, Cole intentionally walked Devers.

Boston decided to take that intentional walk and intentionally score runs on the Yankees. Cole hadn’t given up a hit in the game prior to the walk of Devers, over the next two innings the Red Sox scored 7 runs. Brutal.

Boston’s locker room did not hold back in their postgame interviews, and even Devers himself said, “I didn’t expect that from a future Hall of Famer,” WOOF!

Pretty soft move from Gerrit and the Yankees, which even Yankee fans have agreed with. Sure, Devers owns Cole, but there’s NOBODY on base and you’re up one, literally the worst that can happen is a tie game. Throw the dang ball, Gerrit!

🏈Speaking of Potential Firings, Florida???

There must be something in the water down there in Florida, because the Gators and the Seminoles are drowning right now, and it is NOT pretty.

Florida head coach Billy Napier was booed coming off the field yesterday as his Gators lost to Texas A&M 33-20 at home. That score does not do it justice, Florida got run through and ran over. Texas A&M was by far the better team.

They looked confused, overmatched, and out-schemed in every facet of the game, and it could lead to the swan song of Billy Napier in Gainesville. If Napier gets the boot, he’ll be breaking the bank and a record.

Napier will be the shortest-tenured coach in over 100 years at UF, and the school will owe him roughly $27 million. We may all be reading this tomorrow morning and UF could very well have a head coach vacancy.

⚽️The GOAT is Back!

Friday evenings in Miami are probably pretty good, and it doesn’t hurt when Miami has Lionel Messi back and healthy for their soccer club.

Messi hadn’t played since June 1 for Inter Miami and was hurt during the Copa America final with the Argentinian National team. I’d say that he looked good, but that may be an underestimation.

Messi put two goals in the back of the bin within three minutes and 29 seconds of each other, to respond to the early goal scored by the Philadelphia Union.

He is now up to 14 goals and 13 assists on the season and is tied for fifth in the MLS Golden Boot race despite only appearing in 13 games. Goat for a reason, let’s be real.

Yesterday, but the Good Stuff❗️❗️

Sunday Afternoon Nap

Crucial to Life

This is one of those things I like to refer to as the “cat nap”. Roll up into a little ball and just kind of explore your sleepy side. Maybe it’s 15 minutes, maybe it’s 4 hours. Who knows? But really, who cares?

Trivia Answer:

B. Cooper Manning. The THIRD brother of Eli and Payton, Cooper was apparently the most talented of al of the brothers before an injury derailed his playing career. His son, Arch, is one of the most exciting players in college football and finally saw some playing time yesterday after Texas starting QB Quinn Ewers, left the game with an injury.
