STUMP STORY OF THE DAY✍️

The Jabari Parker Tears Seen Around the Basketball World

Once a top pick in the NBA Draft, the former Duke star now plays in Spain for FC Barcelona, where did his career go wrong?

Reason number 102397429 why I would be fired as a NBA General Manager: Jabari Parker. Coming out of Duke, Parker seemed to be the perfect big for the NBA. He was an elite prospect coming out of Chicago’s Simeon Academy in 2013, he had an extremely productive one-year stint at Duke, and then was drafted No. 2 overall to the Milwaukee Bucks to be paired with the player taken by the Bucks the year before, Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Five years later, Parker was effectively done in the NBA. After two torn ACLs, Parker struggled to look like the player he was supposed to be. Parker was an isolation scorer, who bullied other bigs and used football and technique to score at ease. The evolution of the NBA went away from guys like Parker in favor of players who could stretch the floor and shoot the three ball.

Parker left the Bucks for his hometown Bulls, but lost his starting spot before preseason camp had even ended. He then had a cup of coffee with Atlanta, Sacramento, and Boston, before exiting the league after the 2021-2022 season.

Parker signed with FC Barcelona in Spain for this past season, a highly-respected international club home to former NBA players Willy Hernangomez, Jan Vesely, and Tomas Satoransky. Parker went on to have his best year as a pro but the team was eliminated Sunday afternoon. When asked to reflect on his first year outside of the NBA Parker fell to tears. Unable to control his emotions, the interview was cut, and the question left unanswered.

Often, the dream careers players envision when coming into the NBA do not turn into reality. That doesn’t make it any less hard to watch. Parker was hit a stroke of serious bad luck, career-changing injuries, an evolving NBA, and just inexplicably poor timing.

At just 29-years old, Parker should be in the prime of his NBA career fighting for accolades and championships. Who knows, maybe he would have been a key piece on the 2021 Bucks Championship roster.

He had to watch his draft counterparts Andrew Wiggins and Aaron Gordon go on to win championships and compete at the top of the sport, while the guy drafted behind him, Joel Embiid, has won a MVP. All of those players are making significantly more financially than his 1 year, $2 million deal in Spain.

To me, I don’t think this is about money, nor is it about status. His reaction looks like something coming from a purely competitive person. It’s often hard to deal with the realities of a failed NBA career - especially for a player who was always told he was the best, the cream of the crop, and a future star. Parker is hurting, and this goes to show how much a guy like him loves the game.

I can tell Parker played the game for the right reasons by his emotional response. Who knows, maybe Parker gets an opportunity to work his way back into the NBA, it wouldn’t be the first time it’s happened.

No matter what, I hope Parker finds peace in his career and is able to continue striving as not only a basketball player, but a person too.

Quote of the Day

“All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, and then success is sure.”

Mark Twain

Be so ignorant of failure that you have no concept of it. Failure only comes when you see it as that, be so confident that you see failure as just another step closer to success.
