Today’s Stump Story…

🏈 Is Aaron Glenn the guy in New York?

Glenn was selected in the first round of the 1994 NFL Draft by the New York Jets and now, 31 years later, he has signed on to be the head coach of the franchise. Is he the one that can lead them to a championship?

Glenn, who spent the last three seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, has reportedly said to friends that his dream job was always to become the head coach of the Jets. Well, now that’s a reality. Glenn hit the job market a little earlier than expected this offseason, as the Lions were upset in the divisional round of the NFC playoffs against the Washington Commanders.

The Jets jumped on the opportunity to get Glenn in the door early, spending seven hours in the facility yesterday before flying back to his home in Detroit. Glenn, 52, is a a Bill Parcels guy who becomes only the second person in Jets franchise history to both play for and coach the team. Glenn was a two-time pro bowler in his time with the franchise from 1994 to 2001.

Glenn took over a Lions defense in 2021 that ranked dead last in the NFL the season before. This year, the defense finished 7th in the league. What was most impressive about Glenn’s performance this season was how the defense overcame injuries. Aidan Hutchinson, Charlton Davis, Alex Anzalone, and many more of their starters missed significant time, and the Lions went into the postseason with a noticeable limp.

Glenn is an extremely intense, energetic, and full of life personality. He would be considered a “players coach”, but he’s also extremely detailed and knowledgeable. He’ll have to be on his A-game to win with this franchise.

Glenn is no stranger to the bright lights of working in New York, but it feels like the lights have never been brighter around this franchise. After putting serious financial investment into the roster, the franchise flopped. Rodgers and the offense struggled all year to find fluidity, and the defense was embattled at times. One of the most star-studded rosters in the whole league over the past two seasons only managed to win 12 games, missing the playoffs twice.

Now, with the question marks surrounding Hall of Fame QB Aaron Rodgers and where, or if, he will play next season, Glenn has his work cut out for him. The team has some of the most talented young stars in the whole league in Garret Wilson and Quinnen Williams, but have seriously lacked direction. The franchise is in need of a revolutionary leader, much like what Dan Campbell has done in Detroit. Not only winning football games but driving cultural change and putting hope back into the fans.

Quick Hitters

🌭 Let’s talk about the Value Menu at Baltimore Orioles games. The O’s announced their “Birdland Value Menu” yesterday which features an expanded 11-item menu with $5 or less options. This is something that every professional sports organization should consider. It not only pushes MORE food purchases, but it widens the net of people who can afford to watch a game in the ballpark. The menu features $4 hot dogs, $4 refillable soda cups, $3.50 popcorn, $4 water, $3 desserts, and more. I love the idea of the refillable cups of soda and water, it makes life easier for all fans and patrons. I hope other franchises take notice of all the great publicity this has got across the sports world and put out their own version, not all things should be meant to make insane profits.

🏀 SGA’s MVP Campaign! I mean, if you haven’t been watching NBA basketball for the last two seasons, OKC’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is a star, and OKC has a very bright future. They are the runaway 1-seed in the west right now, and yesterday, SGA had a career-high 54 points in their win over the Utah Jazz. If healthy, this Thunder team very well could find themselves in their first NBA Finals since their trio of Russ, KD, and Harden faced off against the Heat in 2012. SGA is on his way to being this season’s league MVP!

🎾 Some Australian Open drama! After Ben Shelton’s (World Ranked 21) quarterfinal win against Lorenzo Sonego, he took to the microphone to call out those who speak into microphones! A couple of days ago, Novak Djokovic made some headlines for skipping out on a postgame interview. He took to X to tell the fans that there were some rude comments made by a reporter and for that, he decided to hold them responsible and not participate in the postgame on-court interview. I think it’s great to hold people accountable. Let reporters know that their platform can’t just be used to spew hate. Here are Ben Shelton’s comments on the sitch, pretty well said.

C. John Cena! Cena has 16 career reigns, enough to tie Ric Flair. It makes sense, as other wrestlers really struggled to see him. Next on the list is Triple H and Randy Orton, each with 14. Followed by Hulk Hogan (12), Edge (11), and Brock Lesner, the Rock, and a host of other greats tied at 10.
