MLB History

🤔 Yankees’ Pitchers Swap Wives

Photo via Associated Press

Hopefully that title caught your attention, because when I saw it, it sure caught my attention. There’s been some pretty bizarre trades in the history of the MLB, but one of the wildest trades may have came in the Yankees clubhouse on this day in 1973.

Yankees pitchers Mike Kekich and Fritz Peterson held separate news conferences during spring training to announce the same thing: They had traded lives. Yes, lives. They traded wives, kids, dogs, the whole thing.

Wait, WHAT?

The families had been friends since 1969, but the actual swap occurred in the summer of 1972, but made public during spring training. Baseball had officially entered the 70s.

Kekich started to petition for Peterson’s wife in August, and apparently told his own wife, Susan, that he loved Marilyn Peterson more. So, they switched. Marilyn Peterson now was with Mike Kekich, and Susan Kekich was now with Fritz Peterson.

Susan picked up the kids and dogs and moved in with Fritz, while Marilyn picked up her kids and dogs and moved in with Mike! What a world that is!

The craziest thing of all of this is that when the announcement was made, Kekich and Marilyn had already broken up. Oof, that’s messy. But now the separate news conferences make sense. Kekich was very upset with the whole situation, the two had very bitter feelings toward each other. So, they both wanted to tell their sides of the story.

In Susan and Fritz’s case, the two stayed married until his death in the late 2010s. Winner winner, chicken dinner for Susan and Fritz. I guess? I don’t know if that’s appropriate, but the 70s were a different time to say the least.

It’s not like these guys were no names, either. Peterson was a big name in baseball. An All-Star in 1970, and a 17-win season in 1972, Fritz was well known across the league. Kekich was more of a journeyman, but had spent time with many organizations. Interestingly enough, both players’ careers kind of went into the crapper after this. Leading them both to early retirements.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were set to produce a movie about the story, but it never came to fruition. What an absolute WILD story to get you over the Wednesday HUMP DAY blues.

🤕 Kyrie Out for Season with ACL Tear

Dallas Mavericks fans are just absolutely going through it. Kyrie Irving will miss the rest of the season, as well as some of next year, as the team announced Irving has tore his ACL. An absolutely devastating blow to the Mavericks season and Kyrie, as he was finally taking on a number one option role again with Luka gone and AD out with injury. Man, this one really hurt me in my soul.

🏈 Jets and Adams Experiment Officially Over

For those of us who were holding our breath about Davante Adams and his future with the Jets, you can take a breath. The Jets officially released Adams yesterday, a move that saves the team $29.9 million on the salary cap. Rumors have been swirling around Adams and his future, but it seems like he and his agent have been aggressively shopping him for somewhere on the west coast. The Aaron Rodgers regime is truly over in New York. More on the Jets full overhaul.

🏀 Down Goes #1 Auburn!

It was going to be a shootout no matter what when #1 Auburn traveled to face off against #22 Texas A&M! The Tigers just weren’t prepared for how much of a shootout it really was. Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl summed it up in one line after the game, “They just physically dominated us.” A crazy win in which A&M never trailed! This ends a four-game losing streak for the Aggies and will no doubt have major March implications! MADNESS! Check out the highlights here!

💸 Pay. That. Man. Barkley Cashes In!

It wasn’t too long ago that Saquon Barkley and the leagues top RBs got together to discuss how to bring back importance to the RB position. Now, Barkley can say he’s the first RB in NFL history to average more than $20 million a year. Barkley and the Eagles agreed to a 2-year, $41.5 million contract extension yesterday, keeping him in Philly for the foreseeable future. Barkley had two years left on his original contract, but Philly felt the need to lock him down for the long term after his historic 2024 season. MAKE THE RUNNING BACK POSITION GREAT AGAIN! More on the record-breaking extension!
