Let's Talk CFL!

A Wagon in the CFL, Some Electricity From Kevin James, and an Upgrade For Alabama Football

We’ve reached the middle of the week! We’d like to think that what makes us different from other Sports Newsletters is what we cover. Who else is talking about the MONTREAL ALOUETTES from the CFL? An absolute WAGON of a team! Don’t worry we’ve got some mainstream stuff too. Check out this JUICE from Kevin James!

People Aren’t Talking Enough About…

🏈 The Montreal Alouettes 🏈

When you think of football, I know you don’t often go north of the border and head to Canada. Today, we’re going ALL the way over the border. We’re talking the CFL, most importantly, we’re talking the Montreal Alouettes.

The Alouettes sit atop the East Conference but also the best record in the whole CFL, 9-1. Only one other team in the CFL has more than 5 wins!!! Their point differential currently sits at 73, basically that means in 10 games they’ve won by 7.3 points on average. The next best in the CFL? 22. 22!

They’re not only winning, they are DOMINATING. And it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop any time soon.

The Alouettes got better yesterday. Their best player, WR Austin Mack, returned to the roster. He was trying out with the Atlanta Falcons and played in their first preseason game. He was cut from the Falcons roster, and joined his old team once again. Mack is a CFL All-Star and arguably the best receiver in the league, he played his college ball at THE Ohio State University.

Now don’t get me wrong, it’s early. I get that. The Alouettes still have 8 games left to go in the regular season, but all signs are pointing towards them getting better, not any worse.

The CFL is played on Sundays, just like in the US, and typically airs on CBS Sports Network. I know I’ll be checking them out.

🏈 Oklahoma State Wants Your Money

In the age of NIL, universities have gotten very creative in their ways to ask for money. Oklahoma State has taken that to the next level.

When OK State takes the football field this fall, their helmets will have a pretty unique sticker on the back: a QR Code. That code goes directly to the OK State NIL fund donation page. In a not so subtle way, OK State wants, maybe NEEDS, your money!

🏅 Thanks Paris, LA2028 here we come

About a week ago, the official Olympic flag arrived in Los Angeles ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympics. The International Olympic Committee officially awarded Hollywood the Olympics in 2017, but the eyes of the Olympic world shift to LA next.

This will be the third time the City of Angels has hosted the games, once in 1932 and again in 1984. We already got a taste of that movie magic we expect to see a lot of when Tom Cruise came rappelling down from the French stadium roof to officially accept the transition of the flag.

Expect LA2028 to be a spectacle.

💸 Alabama football resets the support staff market

Alabama football has been going through one of the most dynamic generational shifts in college football history this past offseason. With the retirement of legendary coach Nick Saban, Alabama brought in Kalen DeBoer from the University of Washington.

In an unprecedented move, DeBoer paid BIG BUCKS to keep Courtney Morgan in place. Courtney has been with DeBoer for the past two seasons at Washington, and followed DeBoer to Tuscaloosa. Many teams have been calling and trying to recruit the best recruiter in college football, but Bama wasn’t having it.

The two sides agreed to a 3-year contract extension averaged $825,000 annually. This is almost UNHEARD of in college football.

Trivia Answer:

C. Philadelphia Athletics! Back in 1916, the Philly A’s finished the season with 36 wins and 117 loses, the most in the modern era, leading to their .235 winning percentage. Is that bad? It’s not great.
