🏈 The Day Rice Didn’t Catch a Ball

On This Day

Rice Goes Reception-less

In many circles, Jerry Rice is the greatest receiver to ever step on the field in the National Football League. He was remarkably consistent, had game-changing ability, and played for what felt like forever. But everybeody has off-games, right?

On this day in 2004, then-Oakland Raider wide receiver Jerry Rice ends his NFL streak of 274 consecutive games with a reception. 274 games. That’s 18 seasons. The streak started during his rookie year, specifically December of 1985, and finished on this day in 2004. An absolutely remarkable feat given the streak spanned nearly two decades.

Stump Story / Glue Of The Day

👴 58-Year-Old Freshman Ball Player

Oh, great, another college football story about some guy I don’t know. How much money is this guy making? How many schools offered him? How many times has he transferred? No money, no offers, only one transfer: from blue collar to shoulder pads.

Meet Tim Cilllo, an every day joe in a lot of respects. He grew up in Williamsport, PA, and has stayed there his whole life. He spent three decades working for the City of Williamsport’s streets department. He raised a family, retired, and took a more nonchalant job working as an equipment manager and custodian for his high school alma mater, but he found himself needing a change. He had never attended college, not until now.

At 58-years-old Cillo decided it was time to chase his dream: becoming a college football player. So where did he turn? Williamsport’s own Lycoming College, just two blocks from the house he grew up in and on the same streets he’d spent more than 30 years cleaning and maintaining. This time around, however, he’s not cleaning those streets, he’s walking them as a collegiate student athlete. Cillo joined the team as a defensive lineman.

You may think this is a little crazy, and you’re probably right, but this is no joke. Cillo is not a normal 58-year-old, this dude is JACKED. He’s competed in triathlons, strongman contests, powerlifting, and bodybuilding. With this background, he was determined to prove himself to the rest of the team. He did not want to be a charity case. Cillo passed the lifting and conditioning tests with flying colors.

This isn’t just about football, either. Cillo is earning a degree in criminal justice. He wants to prove something to himself, and to everyone else, that age is just a number. Lycoming is a division three program competing in the Landmark Conference. The team currently sits at 0-2, but lost two 3-point games. Cillo has yet to see the field, but that’s not the point. To me, win or lose, play or not, Cillo is an inspiration for chasing your dreams, never giving up, and attacking life with passion and without fear.

The BIG Moments

🏃‍♀️ McLaughlin-Levrone is Golden

The Stump Short Story: It’s been nearly 40 years since a woman has cracked 48 seconds in the 400m, but on Wednesday night in Tokyo, two woman broke the barrier. Second place finisher, Marileidy Paulino, clocked a 47.98, .2 seconds slower than American Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, who crossed the finish line at 47.78, This is the second fastest time in the history of this race, a 47.60 set by East Germany’s Marita Koch in 1985. That record came during East Germany’s doping era, so many consider McLaughlin and Paulino the first to truly break the 48-second mark.

The beauty of that night in Toyko was that this was a massive moment for woman’s sprinting. The 48-second mark has been one that many have eyed, but none had captured. Third place finisher Salwa Eid Nasar clocked a 48.19, which would have been good enough to win the last two world championships. Not a single woman had come within a half-second of Kock’s mark until Wednesday night. McLaughlin-Levrone is one of the most decorated one-lap sprinters in the history of the sport, it’s her 19th straight victory in a one lap race — hurdles or flat. If anyone is going to chase down the recond of Koch, it’s her.

🏈 TNF - Bills Move to 3-0, Dolphins Show Fight!

The Stump Short Story: The Bills welcomes to Dolphins into Buffalo last night in what was expected to be the most lob sided game of the week. The Bills were favored by 12.5 points and the Dolphins really didn’t seem to have anything going right through two weeks. They held a players only meeting after Week 1, Tua had looked bad, and who knows what would have happened to Mike McDaniels had they gotten obliterated last night.

They looked like a completely different team last night. They had long sustained drives on offense, and were able to force a few Bills punts as well. All of that fluff being said, the Bills just had too many weapons too attack with, and were able to get the win 31-21!
