On This Day

📺️ Sports — But in Color!

Remember black and white television? Oh yeah, it used to be a thing for some of our younger folks out there. But then, everything changed.

On this day in 1951, the first sports event to be televised in color took place in Oceanport, New Jersey. CBS broadcasted a live horse race from the Monmouth Park Jockey Club, the Molly Pitcher Handicap horse race. A new world in sports would grow from there.

Glue Guy of the Day

⚾️ Red Sox Not-So-Secret Weapon

Glue Guy of the Day: Ceddanne Rafaela, Boston Red Sox Outfielder

The Boston Red Sox have a pretty crowded outfield that’s full of elite talent, and it felt like all season they were waiting for one guy to really take over the outfield as it’s top player. Now, they might of finally found their guy.

Rafaela came into the season as the sure-fire center fielder, he is one of the best defender at his position in all of baseball, but everyone questioned one thing: can he hit? Y

Yeah, he can hit.

In his last seven games, Rafaela is batting .440, with four home runs and eleven RBIs, including a walk off bomb in Saturday’s game and the go-ahead homer yesterday. He has undoubtedly become THE guy for the Boston Red Sox right now, he’s supercharged their 10-game win streak.

Not only is he hitting the crap out of the ball, but his energy is contagious. He plays with passion, intensity, and his heart on his sleeve. In a post game interview this past weekend, Rafaela juiced me the hell up, “I wanna win. I wanna have to be here for my guys. I have to do everything I can. I wanna win.” FIRE. ME. UP.

There’s a tide shift in Boston, and Rafaela is at the center of it. Ceddanne Rafaela? GLUE. GUY.

The BIG Moments

⛳️ Two Tournaments to Check in On

The Stump Short Story: Across the ocean we saw American Chris Gotterup take home the Scottish Open, surviving a late charge from Rory McIlroy at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick. Back in the United States, the American Century Championship took place in California. This tournament, a star-studded celebrity event featuring guys like Charles Barkley, Steph Curry, Justin Timberlake, and others, was won by former NHL All-Star Joe Pavelski. The San Jose Shark great dropped in an eagle putt on the eighteenth hole to win it all. ELETRIC FACTORY, a moment we all dream of.

Why it Matters: With the win, Gotterup clinched a spot in this weeks Open Championship, the PGA’s third major championship of the season. His second win on tour. On the other side of the world, Pavelski finally broke through to win this tournament in his eleventh appearance. He had eight top tens, including three runner ups. A couple huge wins for two guys who came up in the clutch when they needed it.

🎾 Jannik Sinner Outduels Alcaraz at Wimbledon

The Stump Short Story: Despite entering into this tournament as the number one ranked player in the world, Jannik Sinner felt like the underdog against Carlos Alcaraz yesterday in Wimbledon. Alcaraz, was the two-time defending champion and has dominated the rivalry between the two in recent tournaments. But yesterday was Sinners day, despite losing the first set, Sinner rallied to rip off three straight set victories, and the match. It is his first Wimbledon Championship, becoming the first Italian to win a Wimbledon singles title.

Why it Matters: Sinner, who’s just 23-years old, has dominated the game the last couple of years. He won the 2024 US Open, the last two Australian Opens, and now at Wimbledon. He has played in four consecutive major finals. Sinner and Alcaraz faced off in the final at Roland Garros a little over a month ago, the first time the same two men faced off in the title matches at the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year since Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal did it in 2006, 2007, and 2008. Fitting, as these two are taking over the modern day sport.

⚽️ Chelsea Takes Home CWC

The Stump Short Story: It was a beautiful day to be a fan of the royal blue boys from outside of London, England, as Chelsea football club dominated Paris Saint-Germain in the FIFA Club World Cup Final, 3-0. In front of a sold out crowd at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Cole Palmer sent the crowd into a frenzy with a masterful 22nd minute first half goal. Palmer would add onto it with another 8 minutes later. Joao Pedro 13 minutes after that. It was all Chelsea, all day long.

Why it Matters: The new format of the CWC seemed to be a home run, with people from all across the world checking in to see the final. Chelsea arrived in the US after a pretty disappointing Premier League campaign, but managing to win Europe’s third-tier Conference League championship. It was a great year for the English blue-blood outside of their main league.
